TEXT PLATE: March 15, 2095

A CU of a man's shoes. He taps his feet and shakes his legs as the camera slowly pulls up to reveal an anxious looking man named Robert sitting in a minimalist white office. It's been six months since his beloved wife and 18-year-old step daughter were killed in a car accident and the man is sick with grief. Despite the support of his family and friends, he has been hospitalized twice with severe PTSD and recently placed on a medical leave by his employer. It was his therapist, in fact, who insisted he sign up for this government program as part of his treatment. Robert runs his hands through his hair and wipes his face to get himself together, as the lead scientist and her team of staff enter the room.

The scientist greets Robert with great sensitivity, shaking the man's hand before extending it into a hug and introducing him to her team. She asks Robert to sit down again so they may begin the orientation. Taking her cue, one of the team members uses a tablet to cast a hologram screen beside the scientist (VFX*), as she begins speaking. She welcomes Robert formally to the ARTIFAMILY institute and starts to explain its history. It was founded in 2040 by Dr. Philip Bernard, a psychiatrist and futurist entrepreneur, who had a vision of using artificial intelligence to treat mental illness. Since Bernard's humble beginnings, ARTIFAMILY has evolved to become the leading treatment facility for victims of exploitation, emotional distress, and extreme bereavement. As the scientist explains their story, the screen beside her displays various images of Bernard and the ARTIFAMILY institute. Robert can only half-follow, visibly distracted and anxious about being there.

Taking a pause to gauge his reaction, the scientist continues to explain his case. As she talks about the tragic accident, images of his wife and smiling daughter come on the screen. Robert looks sick, having to put his head between his knees at a certain point. The scientist signals another team member, who brings the man a silver can. Robert sips it meekly as the scientist goes on to discuss his subsequent PTSD diagnosis, work leave, and therapist recommendations. She empathizes about how hard it is for humans to retain employment and that he is lucky his corporation is so supportive. He has no expression.

Kneeling beside him, the scientist sympathetically reminds him that today is the first step in his healing process. ARTIFAMILY specializes in creating android clones of deceased loved ones so that no one must suffer the loss of losing someone too soon ever again. Their team of scientists were able to upload and digitize their brain cells to construct an exact clone, using machine learning and patented algorithms to generate a personality match from the digital data. Apart from a small microchip behind the left earlobe, you would never know that ARTIFAMILY members weren't human. As she tells Robert about the program, the screen displays various sales pitches and stock images of androids being built. Robert stares at them in disbelief. The scientist signals her team to leave the room and they file out obediently, the hologram screen closing as they exit.

'Mr. White,' she says quietly. 'In compliance with the AIX act, I need to inform you that we are only legally allowed to dispatch one android clone per household. Since you did not specify your preference in the initial application, we have taken the liberty to generate the more viable of the two candidates. I hope it will suffice.' Robert looks at her blankly, asking what she means by 'viable' as the team re-enters the room behind them. They are escorting the android daughter, who stands rigidly between them in a white tank top and white shorts. 'Daddy,' she whispers. Robert freezes. His eyes well up as he slowly turns around to see the perfect likeness to his daughter. She looks expressionless for a moment before smiling and laughing. Cut to Robert opening the front door with his luggage and ushering his daughter inside. Cautiously and not willing to let go of her hand, he calls her by name (Jessica) and asks if she remembers their home. She steps inside, turns around, and smiling nods her head -- telling her father the exact date and time he and his late wife moved their family into the house, along with the property's coordinates: 34.0259 N, 118.7798 W. CUT to inside the white room. Amber slowly wakes up to discover that she in a strange, new environment. She looks down at herself in disbelief. She is back in her school uniform. Where is her room? CUT to inside a derelict building. The couple approach the window and a man's shoulder steps into frame. He is the man Jacob saw earlier, another drifter. The couple wave their weapons above their arms and tell the man they mean no harm. They want to know if he has any information. The man hesitates before slowly sticking his head out of the door. 'You tell me first,' he says. The couple look at each other before Jacob replies that they heard it was an asteroid. Nothing works. No GPS, no internet, no electricity. The man pauses before replying 'I heard it was a nuclear attack, but I've only met 13 other people.' He pauses, before adding 'I also know where some water is.' Katlyn jumps in, demanding to know where. The man sticks his head out a little further and says he'll tell them but only if they give him some of their own water first. Jacob clutches the jug tightly. He weighs his options before Katlyn urges him to do it. Jacob agrees, and the man pulls out a dirty plastic container. Jacob fills it up and the man eagerly takes it, before telling them there is a well two miles up the road. He disappears inside, and the couple turn to keep walking.

CUT to the middle of nowhere. The couple walk through the blazing sun, with nothing in sight. Their jug is empty, and both are growing desperate. They argue about the water before coming upon a body lying in the road. Looking down on it, they root through the person's pockets but only find a dead phone.

Katlyn pleads that she is hungry, and Jacob tells her that water is more important. They need to keep walking. He tosses the phone in the dirt.

The distortion effect ripples out across the screen like a shockwave. Sound and movement slow to a stop for everyone but Ted. Ted is confused, looks around the room, sees that his clock is no longer moving. He remarks that it's weird the clock stopped. He feels something is amiss and sees that the Newton's Cradle has stopped in mid swing. He can't believe what he's seeing, and pulls back a bit in fear.

Ted leans in to peer and scrutinize the Newton's Cradle with shock and curiosity. Ted looks in wonder and cautiously reaches a hand out. He touches the Cradle. At his touch, the balls instantly start to swing again, the clacking sound whooshing back. Ted stares for a moment at the moving Cradle, then something catches his attention out the window. He goes to look out the window. 'What...the...hell? Everything's just...STOPPED. The birds...the people. Nothing's...MOVING. Th-that's IMPOSSIBLE. It's like time is just...FROZEN,' Ted says in stunned disbelief.

Ted looks down at his hand, only now noticing he still is idly holding the open watch in his hand. It starts to dawn on him that the watch did this. He looks out at the frozen city in awe, gazing back and forth between the city and the watch a few times. He seems to get an idea. As he stares out the window, he snaps the clock closed.

Instantaneously, the sounds of the cityscape whoosh back in and the clock hand begins moving again. Everything has become unfrozen. Ted stares, stunned into silence, for several seconds. 'Gabi...' he finally whispers.

CUT TO TITLE

CUT TO another day. Gabi's birthday dinner party is in full swing. Gabi (Alina Lopez) sits beside Drake (Nathan Bronson) at the dinner table. Ted sits across from Gabi. Ted gets up slowly from his chair and paces the room, slowly walking and examining the guests. He seems bitter and disgusted at their happy expressions. He looks at Gabi first, then over to Drake with jealousy, then enters the kitchen briefly to circle Pat and Leslie making sure they're frozen - waving his hand in front of their faces and snapping his fingers in front of their eyes. Ted takes a deep breath, exhaling heavily as he calms down, glancing at the pocket watch and considering what to do.

Ted resumes his spot at the dining room table, sighing. He looks back at Gabi, Drake beside her, her hand held out to Ted showing off the ring. His expression turns possessive as he gazes at her. He readies himself and reaches out to touch her outstretched hand.

Gabi unfreezes and immediately panics when she discovers everyone else is frozen except her and Ted. She tries to wake Drake up but can't. Ted explains that the pocket watch can stop time. It's a small but powerful antenna designed to transmit mathematical equations into space in the hopes of contacting a ghost rocket.

Roger believes this long-disputed UFO phenomenon is the key to contacting alien life forms. As he connects the final pieces of his machine together, he mutters into a makeshift gadget on his wrist: 'In 1946 and 1947, numerous reports occurred of ghost rockets appearing over Scandinavian countries, primarily Sweden, which then spread into other European countries. In 2046, similar reports resurfaced of ghost rockets appearing in the Pacific Northwest and down through parts of California and Mexico. All 200 sightings have been refuted by the US government, despite being verified with radar returns and, in some cases, physical fragments...'

He puts his wrist down, stripping off his shirt and putting a tin foil cap on his head. '...Until now, you sons of bitches!'
